Parenting can be an uphill battle, especially in today’s world where opinions and judgments are freely thrown around, both by family members and strangers on the internet.
Jordan Driskell, a 31-year-old father, knows this firsthand as he takes care of his energetic quintuplets who are now five years old. Keeping them under control, especially in public, can be quite challenging.
To tackle this challenge, Jordan came up with a creative solution – leashes. Yes, you heard it right, leashes designed specifically for children.
Although this may raise some eyebrows, it has actually proven to be a helpful tool for Jordan in managing his little ones. The family had previously used a 6-seat stroller, but it quickly became inconvenient and bothersome for the children.
By using leashes, Jordan’s children are able to freely explore their surroundings while he can maintain control and ensure their safety. It’s a win-win situation. In fact, one of their outings to the aquarium was filmed and shared by Jordan, garnering over 3 million views. However, along with the attention came negative feedback from people who criticized the use of leashes on children.
Some comments suggested that using leashes implies treating the children as animals, while others questioned Jordan and his wife’s ability to parent. But let’s hear another perspective from an expert in parenting and adolescent development, Dr. Deborah Gilboa.
According to Dr. Gilboa, leashes can actually be a helpful tool, especially for younger children or those with neurodiversity, in keeping them safe in public places. She highlights that as children grow older and develop their listening skills, they should be taught to listen and communicate effectively without relying on leashes.
At the end of the day, parents should have the freedom to raise their children in the way they believe is best, without unnecessary judgment from society. Each child is different, and what works for one may not work for another. So, before jumping to conclusions, let’s remember to have empathy and understanding for parents who are doing their best in unique circumstances.
